How to Use Singing Secrets Audio Workouts

Why are there three sets of the same exercises?

Why are there three sets of the same exercises?

Why are there three sets of the same exercises?

There are three sets of exercises with 8 songs in each set!

  • The first series uses humming to slightly increase the air pressure within the vocal tract, helping the vocal folds vibrate more efficiently. This, and other SOVT (Semi-Occluded Vocal Tract) exercises, like lip and tongue trills, also helps by reducing tension in the throat and jaw. This version of the workout can also be used to move through the exercises using any preferred syllable or sound.

  • The second series uses a number system for the scale (1=Do, 2=Re, 3=MI, 4=Fa, 5=So, 6=La, 7=Ti, 8=Do (octave)

  • The third series uses the Solfège syllables Do, Re, Mi, Fa, So, La, Ti, Do. Solfège syllables can help identify the position the notes are on the scale and to learn scale-note relationships. Solfège Syllables (Do, Re, Mi, Fa, So, La, Ti, Do) give relative names for what pitch is being used. These syllables help the singer identify the function and the placement of the note in the musical scale.

With any of the exercises, practice for precision of pitch and desired note quality. Record sessions for accurate feedback.

Tips for Vocal Tone, Control & Placement

For Tone/Control

Some vowels are easier to sing while trying to gain strength, control or flexibility in any given range. Sometimes a shift in placement using vowel modification can aid in improving voice quality or range (depending on placement).

-Chest: Vowels that are easy to sing in head voice (open vowel)

EH (Etta), AA (At), AH (Ought), UH (Uh, Yeah)

-Head: Vowels that are easy to sing in head voice (closed vowel)

AY (Ain’t), EE (Eat), OO (Oo Child), OH (Oat) high tongue placement and narrowed vocal tracts. Upper Range: also drop jaw slightly to open interior space as ascension

-Mixed: Vowels that are easy to sing in mix voice

EH (Met) ooo or AH (like a yawn) moving to awh by Gently lose the weight of chest voice. Use slides up to down with tongue in “EE” position

Neutral Vowels: Vowels that are easy to sing in head, chest or mixed voice

IH (It), OU (Book)

Essential For Moving Through Vocal Registers:

Consistent SOUND pressure must be maintained with the tone production despite change in vocal register. This might require a change in the level of the source of the pressure (diaphragm) to keep the pressure at the location of the vocal folds steady. The pressure needs to change according to the resistance. Start softly and slowly with minute adjustments in pressure changes due to physical sensations.

Using Alternate Syllables & Vibrato

Why are there three sets of the same exercises?

Using Alternate Syllables & Vibrato

What if you want to use your own choice of syllable?

All exercises can be sung on any syllable of choice. Some syllables may be more suited for a specific targeted result. (See the tips for vocal placement for the easiest placement while working on a particular area.)

In addition, the exercises can be adjusted to suit a preferred octave for desired area of focus or voice range. Each exercise is simultaneously demonstrated by a lower and a higher voice.

If any strain or pain begins to occur, stop immediately! Focus on relaxation and gentle gain.

What about using vibrato?

Vibrato is a rapid, slight variation in pitch in singing. Even, steady vibrato is generally the goal when vibrato is used. Depending on preference, you can practice for none (straight tone), fast/slow as well as shallow/wide vibrato.
